The Great Controversy

The Great Controversy - The King James Version

Background

When building this website, originally the King James Version (KJV) was the only version of the Bible available on BibleAnywhere.com. It was my intention to add different versions of the Bible for study purposes. As I added different versions of the Bible, I noticed some versions “skipped” verses, completely leaving them out. This prompted me to study different versions of the Bible by using a comparative study method. In this document you will find an in-depth comparative study of the King James Version (KJV), New International Version (NIV), American Standard Version (ASV), and the New American Standard Bible (NASB).

I am not a preacher or an ordained minister; I am an Information Technologies Specialist (in other words, a “Computer Guy” or “IT-Geek”). I am foremost a Christian who has been charged with creating this website. I could not in good conscience have different translations to study from without writing this page.

Do Not Be Found Willingly Ignorant

2 Peter 3:5 is one of my favorite passages, this verse is very powerful to me. It not only is a crucial part of my other studies, but the wording is unusually strong.
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:”
This is the only part in the Bible that I have found that states people are willingly ignorant of anything. They are willingly ignorant of something that came “by the word of God”.

Also, Hosea 4:6 states
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”
I have to include this article to displace a “lack of knowledge” in this particular area.

Satan’s Great Deception

I think Satan’s greatest deception is not to change the Word of God entirely, but to slightly skew it.
In Genesis 3:1 Satan said
“Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
This was not entirely correct. God said in Genesis 2:16-17
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
Eve was also not willingly ignorant of the Word of God as shown in Genesis 3:2-3
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.”

Satan also tries to take the Word of God out of context. After going into the wilderness, Satan came unto Jesus saying
“And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.” [Matthew 4:6]
This shows us that Satan does indeed know the Word of God, because he is actually quoting scripture found in Psalms 91:11-12
“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone”
But Jesus clearly knew that Satan was taking the Word of God out of context when he said
“Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” [Matthew 4:7]

It is interesting to note that just before this question of Satan (Matthew 4:6), Jesus was stating the importance of the Word of God.
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” [Matthew 4:4]
Note the NIV version: “Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone.'"” [Matthew 4:4 NIV]

Make no mistake about it; Satan continues to attempt to deceive the world. In Matthew 13:36-43, Jesus explains the Parable of the Tares, which he spoke about earlier (Matthew 13:24-30). Jesus says in Matthew 13:37-39
“He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.”

Dr. Frank Logsdon (NASV)

Dr. S. Frank Logsdon (1907-1987) was an evangelical pastor and co-founder and respected committee member on the New American Standard Version (NASV). He helped in picking the translators for this version, and wrote the Foreword that appears in the NASV.

Ten years before his death on June 9, 1977, he wrote a letter to Cecil Carter of Prince George, British Columbia:
“When questions began to reach me [pertaining to the NASV], at first I was quite offended. However, in attempting to answer, I began to sense that something was not right about the NASV. Upon investigation, I wrote my very dear friend, Mr. Lockman, explaining that I was forced to renounce all attachment to the NASV. ... I can aver that the project was produced by thoroughly sincere men who had the best of intentions. The product, however, is grievous to my heart and helps to complicate matters in these already troublous times.”

Dr. Logsdon later went on to say
“I must under God renounce every attachment to the New American Standard Version. I'm afraid I'm in trouble with the Lord… We laid the groundwork; I wrote the format; I helped interview some of the translators; I sat with the translator; I wrote the preface… I'm in trouble; I can't refute these arguments; its wrong, terribly wrong; and what am I going to do about it.
When questions began to reach me at first I was quite offended… I used to laugh with others… However, in attempting to answer, I began to sense that something was not right about the New American Standard Version. I can no longer ignore these criticisms I am hearing and I can't refute them… The deletions are absolutely frightening… there are so many… Are we so naive that we do not suspect Satanic deception in all of this?
Upon investigation, I wrote my very dear friend, Mr. Lockman, explaining that I was forced to renounce all attachment to the NASV. The product is grievous to my heart and helps to complicate matters in these already troublous times… I don't want anything to do with it.
(T)he finest leaders that we have today… haven't gone into it (the new version's use of a corrupted Greek text), just as I hadn't gone into it… that's how easily one can be deceived …I'm going to talk to him (Dr. George Sweeting, president of Moody Bible Institute) about these things.
(Y)ou can say the Authorized Version (KJV) is absolutely correct. How correct? 100%correct! … I believe the Spirit of God led the translators of the Authorized Version. If you must stand against everyone else, stand …”
With strong warnings like these, you can now see why I am forced to write this page.

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

There are many different views of Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit. My understanding of this is learned from Mark 3:20-30.

The results of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit are never having forgiveness and endangerment of eternal damnation.
“But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:” [Mark 3:29]

After hearing of this terrible consequence, the next obvious question is, what is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? According to this same passage, the scribes said that Jesus not only had an unclean spirit,
“Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.” [Mark 3:30]
but that the power of Jesus was from Satan.
“And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.” [Mark 3:22]
(They stating this after the healings and casting out of devils that Jesus performed earlier in Mark 2:23 – 3:12)

Please understand my heart here. I will not even entertain the thought of committing blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (and strongly encourage you to do the same). Unlike others, I will not be as bold to say that any version of the Word of God is of the devil, because Jesus is the Word (John 1:1). If Dr. Logsdon dares to make such accusations and denounces every attachment to the NASV, I will only read from the proven Authorized Version (King James Version).

My Struggle To Include Other Translations

Why include the other translations in your website? I am sure this is your next question. Go back and read the last paragraph. I will continue to include other versions of the Bible if only to point out the differences of other versions. This is not done to confuse,
“God is not the author of confusion” [1 Corinthians 14:33]
but rather to prove the true Word of God.
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” [1 Thessalonians 5:21]

If you find yourself confused, just pray for the Holy Spirit’s guiding and teachings
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” [John 14:26]

All Bible Versions Are Not Created Equally

Isaiah 9:3
KJV
“Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.”

NIV
“You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder.”

ASV
“Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.”

NASB
“You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.”

2 Samuel 21:19

KJV
“And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.”

NIV
“In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod.”

ASV
“And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim the Beth-lehemite slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.”

NASB
“There was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.”

Isaiah 14:12

KJV
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”

NIV
“How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!”

ASV
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations!”

NASB
“How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!”

This is unusually disturbing, because Jesus is the morning star and the Holy Spirit is the day star.

“I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” [Revelation 22:16 KJV]
“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:” [2 Peter 1:19]

Matthew 5:22

KJV
“But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.”

NIV
“But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

ASV
“but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.”

NASB
“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ' You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.”

This too is equally disturbing, because Jesus did get angry, but with just cause.

“And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.” [Mark 3:5 KJV]

Luke 11:2-4

KJV
“And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”

NIV
“He said to them, "When you pray, say: " 'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.' "”

ASV
“And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Father, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation.”

NASB
“And He said to them, " When you pray, say: ' Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
'Give us each day our daily bread.
'And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.'"”

Just take a moment to study this to see what is actually missing.

Romans 1:25

KJV
“Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

NIV
“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.”

ASV
“for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

NASB
“For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”

There is a huge difference between changing into and exchagning for.

Colossians 1:14

KJV
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”

NIV
“in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

ASV
“in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins:”

NASB
“in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

The shedding of blood is extremely important, to fulfill prophecy.

Luke 2:33

KJV
“And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.”

NIV
“The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him.”

ASV
“And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him;”

NASB
“And His father and mother were amazed at the things which were being said about Him.”

Revelations 5:14

KJV
“And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.”

NIV
“The four living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped.”

ASV
“And the four living creatures said, Amen. And the elders fell down and worshipped.”

NASB
“And the four living creatures kept saying, "Amen." And the elders fell down and worshiped.”

Jesus does live forever and ever.

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” [Revelation 22:13 KJV]

Matthew 1:25

KJV
“And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.”

NIV
“But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”

ASV
“and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS.”

NASB
“but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.”

Being firstborn is imperative to fulfill prophecy of a virgin birth.

Acts 4:27

KJV
“For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,”

NIV
“Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed”

ASV
“for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together,”

NASB
“For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,”

Child and servant are not the same.

1 Tim 3:16

KJV
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

NIV
“Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.”

ASV
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness; He who was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the spirit, Seen of angels, Preached among the nations, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.”

NASB
“By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.”

Again, this is a very important doctrine.

“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?” [John 14:9 KJV]

All of these slight changes may not seem very significant as you are reading them, but maybe that is because you have not yet seen the significance in your life up until now. But, when you receive a Rema Word from God, every single word suddenly becomes vital to dissect, study and meditate upon. Also how important is wording to an unbeliever, or someone who tries to twist the Word of God, or to a child in Christ?

Where are the Verses?

The following verses have been totally removed from the following versions:
NIV
Matthew 17:21, 18:11, 23:14
Mark 7:16, 9:44, 9:46, 11:26, 15:28
Luke 17:36, 23:17
John 5:4
Acts 8:37, 15:34, 24:7, 28:29
Romans 16:24
1 John 5:7

Darby
Matthew 23:14
Acts 8:37

Acts 15:34

Go ahead; try finding these verses in the NIV or Darby Translation. I would also implore you to look up these verses (in the KJV of course) and see how truly significant they are.

You will notice that 1 John 5:7 (NIV) is really the first part of 1 John 5:8, therefore splitting 1 John 5:8 and removing the original 1 John 5:7 verse.

Along with these complete omissions, thousands of verses have partial omissions. Some scholars claim that over 64,000 words have been omitted.

There are many, many more examples to show and items that weren’t even touched here. I just wanted to give a basic foundation to show there are significant differences in these versions. With so many differences that I have seen, I will stick with the KJV, and looking up the Greek and Hebrew Definitions.
